Real Madrid target Xabi Alonso is approaching a crucial decision point on his future, according to Marca. Last summer, Alonso was Europe’s hottest coaching prospect after leading Bayer Leverkusen to an impressive double and an undefeated Bundesliga season. Despite interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid, he chose to remain in Germany for at least another season.
Real Madrid has emerged as the leading candidate to secure his services next season, as the club endures a challenging season by its standards, with Carlo Ancelotti’s departure seeming increasingly likely. Marca reports that Alonso will make his decision about his future in March, revealing that while he received offers from Liverpool and Bayern last summer, Real Madrid never formally approached him.
“Throughout his career, he has made decisions with his head rather than his heart,” Marca writes about Alonso. “He always wants to do everything the right way and doesn’t rush to skip stages on his path to where he wants to be. When Bayern Munich approached him, he felt he needed to stay loyal to his current workplace, and the same happened when Liverpool approached him to replace Jurgen Klopp.”
After last season’s dream run, Leverkusen has faced more challenges this season, currently sitting 9 points behind Bayern Munich after 10 rounds, making it difficult to repeat their historic championship. Marca reports that the relationship between Alonso and Leverkusen remains excellent, with the club understanding that their manager will eventually leave for another destination. The only question is when the decision will be made, with March emerging as the key date.
